“Love hurts…Love scars…Love wounds and marks…” go the song lyrics. As Valentine’s Day approaches, it’s worth taking a few precautions to prevent Love doing any of those things.
Planning a romantic meal by candlelight? The National Fire Protection Association(NFPA)reports that between 2011 and 2015, U.S. fire departments responded to around 8,690 house fires that were started by candles, which resulted in 800 injuries and 82 deaths.
So as charming as Valentine’s Day often is, it can create a perfect storm of risk factors: candlelight, a glass or two of Champagne and the distraction of romance. How about LED candles as an alternative to the real thing? They look as warm and attractive with zero risk.
Actually, talking about Champagne, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) took the step of issuing a plea for anyone headed out for a romantic dinner on Valentine’s Day, to factor in a sober ride. Of course, candles, candy and roses aren’t for everyone. Love isn’t a cookie-cutter thing and Valentine’s Day can be more meaningful when it goes off-piste. How about hiking, camping under the stars or riding out on two wheels to somewhere amazing? We’re lucky to live in one of the most spectacular places in the world, and there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate in the style that fits you and your Valentine best.

And one final thing…if you’re considering proposing this Valentine’s Day, think twice about trying out the ring-at-the-bottom-of-the-glass or embedded in a chocolate soufflé thing. Great in a movie, but what can we say? Some people really, really like chocolate soufflé…
